Hotel Martinez, Cannes
Hotel Martinez (now called The Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez) is a beacon for European Art Deco architecture on the famous Croisette. The hotel of choice for the big guns of the film industry during the film festival, it also has the largest beach in Cannes, and is said to house the most expensive suite in the world. This five-star hotel is a striking white seven-storey art deco landmark building, with its distinctive wrought iron balconies. Completed in 1929, it was designed by architect Charles Palermo. When an Italian hotelier purchased the land and existing villa, he planned to build the largest art deco palace on the French Riviera. Although the hotel has been frequently renovated there are still many echoes of its original design.
